GOLDEN

The GOLDEN series (2017–2026) explores the relationship between history, memory, value, and temporality through the act of painting over gold surfaces. Gold functions here both as material and metaphor, carrying associations of permanence, trust, and wealth. My interest in gold began during an exhibition at De Nederlandsche Bank in 2016, where I exhibited alongside artists such as Marcel Broodthaers, James Lee Byars, Berend Strik, and Hans van Houwelingen. In that institutional context, gold revealed itself not only as a precious material, but also as a system of belief and economic projection. In this series, I deliberately obscure gold surfaces with paint, often covering them to the point where they become almost entirely obscured. This gesture shifts attention from material value to perception and belief: Can you trust the painting?
The works question whether hidden value still influences meaning when it is no longer visible. Does the presence of gold beneath the surface alter how a painting is perceived or valued, even when it cannot be seen? At the same time, the series reflects on memory as something layered and constructed, where meaning accumulates over time. Like value, memory is not fixed but dependent on interpretation, belief, and context.
